Views on Deviantart and my usage of these accounts:
So, first off, I'm only using my two accounts to keep in touch with people, any art I post here will be for sale only and probably only adoptables at that because I really don't value these accounts anymore, like at all. Clearly not enough to put actual art I spent a shitton of time on when things are still likely to get stolen and I don't have a large enough following for it to ever get spotted if something does get stolen.
I don't like deviantart anymore. Like at all, really. The points system, the commission center, the badges, the subscriptions; it's all ways to scam 13 year olds out of their money. There are plenty of other sites where it doesn't cost your consumer 5x the amount of money you initially charge for the product while making like 25 cents a sale. DA jacks up the price too ridiculously. Convenient, yes, something I would allow with anything I make? Most certainly not.
Points? No. Waste of time. I need money to eat with, not to buy stupid virtual sprite badges I could make myself in my spare time.
Badges are stupid, like I said, I could make my own badges if I wanted to put in the time and feel a hell of a lot more accomplished than I would from buying one.
Subscriptions are a waste, especially since Tumblr and Nabyn are both fully customizable, like 10x what DA is if you know what you're doing and both completely free.
It's too much work, here. One of these days I'll probably delete all my art off these and deactivate one or both and restart so I only have people following me that I plan to keep in touch with/buy from.
Like, the only thing DA offers is exposure, and even then, I get pretty much none, so there is no point.
Nabyn might be dead, but it offers so much more in the idea of an online portfolio that I want, and I'm currently waiting for the new update to be released and the transition to .net and whatnot. Wysp looks better too, with classes and things that will actually help you improve. DA is a market taking advantage of unsuspecting kids, like I saved and saved for a subscription when I was younger, only to find out how much of a let down it was because i could get the same thing on other sites for free.
